En el año 1829 se menciona la ermita de Santo Domingo.
Fue creada Parroquia el 23 agosto de 1854 por Monseñor Anselmo Llorente y Lafuente, I Obispo de San José.
El 23 julio 1891, Monseñor Bernardo Augusto Thiel, II Obispo de San José, consagró el templo y entregó el título de Basílica, título que debía ser renovado periódicamente (Fondos Antiguos, Caja 400A, fs. 5-6).
