El 20 abril 1944 el Sr. Arzobispo Mons. Víctor Sanabria Martínez,, da el decreto de erección de la Parroquia Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, Cartago, señalando como fecha de inauguración el 25 de abril 1944
(Libro de Acuerdos Nº 11 folio 135 asiento 66).
La Basílica, fue consagrada por el Sr. Arzobispo Mons. Román Arrieta Villalobos, el 23 abril 1994.
El 26 de julio de 1935 el Papa Pío IX, da el decreto Pontificio por el cual el Templo se le da el Título de Basílica Menor de Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles.
