Al centro: escudo con cetro real y lirio, encima una corona y sobre ésta 5 estrellas, todos ellos emblemas heráldicos de Anselmo Llorente y Lafuente, I obispo de San José de Costa Rica (cetro, lirio y corona representan al Patriarca San José; y las estrellas hacen alusión a las 5 provincias que se establecieron en 1848). A ambos lados del escudo, figuran un barco de vela y un volcán; en la parte inferior se representa el mar mediante líneas horizontales; sobre el escudo: M. Castro.
